Section Corner Information

Corner Records

Fresno County uses the standard BPELSG corner record form. There are no fees associated with filing them. Corner records can initially be submitted in a PDF format for our review, but the stamped & signed originals should be on cardstock.

8773.1. Corner record form

"The board shall by regulation provide and prescribe the information which shall be necessary to be included in the corner record and the board shall prescribe the form in which such corner record shall be submitted and filed, and the time limits within which the form shall be filed. A corner record shall be a single 8.5 by 11 inch sheet which may consist of a front and back page."

If, during the course of your survey, you find that monument conditions have changed, please consider filing updated corner records with the County. You can use the standard BPELSG corner record form, and there is no fee to file it.

Scott McKay Monuments

Scott McKay was the last elected Fresno County Surveyor.  He served until his passing in 1918.

As the County Surveyor, he was tasked with replacing many of the original GLO Section Corners in the County with a more permanent monument.  The monuments he set - the type considered to be a "McKay Monument" in and around Fresno County - were generally a 4" diameter by 72" long (6 feet), concrete filled pipe. They have a cap set on the top of the pipe with a distinctive square nut in the center. The nut was attached to a bolt that goes through the cap and anchors into the concrete. Most have "Fre Co - Sec Cor" in relief on the cap; some have "S McKay LS - Sec Cor". The elements may have caused some deterioration to the text & nut details on many of them, but the structure of the monument usually remains intact. They are often found 18"-36" below grade, and because of their larger diameter, they are usually not completely uncovered by field crews.  They are consequently mistaken for, and described as, a bolt or rod in concrete.

Suffice to say, McKay monuments are large and substantial, and generally regarded nearly as high as an original GLO monument.
