Biography

About Garry

Garry graduated from Rutgers University in New Jersey with a Bachelor’s Degree. He continued his education at Yeshiva University in New York, earning a Master’s Degree, before moving to Fresno in 1982 to pursue graduate studies. In 1983, he met and married his wife, Susan, who has called Fresno home since her teenage years. By 1985, Garry had earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Fresno.

Driven by a desire to serve his country, Garry became a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, serving as a clinical psychologist from 1985 to 1988. His first assignment was at the prestigious National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, one of the nation’s leading military medical facilities. He was later stationed at the Naval Medical Clinic in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he provided psychological services to both Marines and Naval personnel.

After being honorably discharged, Garry returned to Fresno in 1988 and established a private practice. In 1992, he began a 27-year career at the Fresno Veterans Hospital, offering psychological care to veterans until his retirement in 2019. Susan, a retired primary school teacher with the Fresno Unified School District, shares Garry’s dedication to service.

Together, Susan and Garry raised three children in Fresno. Their family has been the cornerstone of their lives, and today, they find immense joy in their two grandchildren.

Community Leadership

Garry is a proven leader and served three terms on the Fresno City Council. His first term (1997–2001) came at a pivotal time when Fresno faced significant challenges with crime. Working alongside fellow council members and the mayor, Garry helped implement transformative changes that made Fresno safer. Hundreds of police officers were hired, traffic enforcement improved, graffiti was significantly reduced, and Fresno earned recognition as an All-America City.

After a hiatus from public office, Garry returned to the City Council in 2017. Among his first initiatives was placing the National Motto, In God We Trust, in the Council Chambers.

Over the last eight years serving on the City Council, Garry consistently demonstrated principled leadership. He was a vocal opponent of radical policies and corruption, and strongly advocated for transparency and accountability at City Hall. During the pandemic, he stood against lockdowns, church and business closures, and school shutdowns.

Through his leadership, Fresno has the highest number of police officers and firefighters in the City’s history.

A Vision for County Leadership

As a County Supervisor, Garry is committed to bringing the same principled leadership and proven results to the broader region. He is focused on enhancing public safety, promoting fiscal responsibility, and ensuring that county policies reflect the values and priorities of its residents. Just as he worked tirelessly to reduce crime, improve government accountability, and uphold traditional values as a City Councilmember, Garry will apply his experience and dedication to tackling the challenges facing the county.

Garry believes the county deserves strong, courageous leadership that prioritizes the needs of its communities. He is determined to foster safe neighborhoods, support local businesses, and advocate for policies that uphold law and order while safeguarding the rights and freedoms of every citizen.
